How the maximum value is worked out

  1. Each statement line with a date and a balance is read; the highest balance of each day is kept. The balance held on January 1 (the last closing balance of the year before) counts too.
  2. The highest of those in the calendar year is the account's maximum, in its own currency, with its date.
  3. It is divided by the Treasury Reporting Rate of Exchange for December 31 of that year (foreign units per US dollar) and rounded up to the next whole dollar. Record all amounts as U.S. Dollar amounts rounded up to the next whole dollar. The amount $15,265.25 would be recorded as $15,266.
  4. The maxima of all accounts are added. Over $10,000 means an FBAR is due for that year. If the value results in a negative (minus) value, enter zero (0) in item 15, Maximum account value.

Sample data: the sample current account peaks at 10,030.40 EUR on Aug 29, 2025; at the 2025 rate of 0.851 per dollar that is $11,787. With the sample GBP balance the aggregate is $15,004.

FinCEN: "The maximum value of an account is a reasonable approximation of the greatest value of currency or nonmonetary assets in the account during the calendar year. Periodic account statements may be relied on if they fairly reflect the maximum account value. Each account is valued separately." Filers with fewer than 25 accounts who cannot determine whether the aggregate maximum values exceeded $10,000 complete the account section for each account and check the "amount unknown" box, item 15a.

The FBAR is due April 15 following the calendar year reported, with an automatic extension to October 15; no request is needed. You file on FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System, free; individuals do not need to register. See the Treasury rates by year.

Where the rates and rules come from

Rates: the Treasury Reporting Rates of Exchange as of December 31, 2019-2025, read from the Treasury's Fiscal Data API on 2026-09-30. Rules: FinCEN's maximum value page, the FBAR line item instructions and the IRS FBAR page, each quoted with its date. Your statements stay in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FBAR maximum account value?
The maximum value of an account is a reasonable approximation of the greatest value of currency or nonmonetary assets in the account during the calendar year. Periodic account statements may be relied on if they fairly reflect the maximum account value. Each account is valued separately. It goes in item 15 in US dollars, rounded up to the next whole dollar.
Is the FBAR maximum account value in USD or local currency?
You find the peak in the account's own currency, then convert it to US dollars at the Treasury rate for December 31 of the year. Item 15 is always in US dollars.
Which exchange rate does the FBAR use?
The Treasury Reporting Rate of Exchange for the last day of the calendar year, not the rate on the day of the peak. This site carries the December 31 rates for 2019-2025.
What if the FBAR maximum account value is unknown?
Filers with fewer than 25 accounts who cannot determine whether the aggregate maximum values exceeded $10,000 complete the account section for each account and check the "amount unknown" box, item 15a.
Does this work with a Wise account?
Yes. Download one statement per currency balance as CSV (or JSON) and load them all with the same account name: the tool finds each balance's peak, converts each and adds them for the account. That sum is never lower than the account's true peak.
Are my statements uploaded?
No. The files are read by this page in your browser; only the highest and closing balance of each day are kept in this browser so the page remembers them. Nothing is sent to a server or to analytics.
When is the FBAR due in 2026?
The FBAR for 2025 was due April 15, 2026, with an automatic extension to October 15, 2026. No request is needed.
